Meet Alina

Soprano Alina Tamborini has been praised by The New York Times as "unusually big-voiced and feisty," with New York Classical Review describing her voice as "dazzling with beauty and sensitivity." This season, Mrs. Tamborini will take the stage as Eurydice in Orfeo ed Eurydice with Libero Canto, Fiordiligi in Così fant tutte with Bronx Opera, Adele in Die Fledermaus with Opera Magnifico, Claire Clairmont in the world premiere of Gemma Peacocke’s A Strange Power with Princeton Sound Kitchen, and Gloria in Handel’s Olinto pastore, Tebro fiume, Gloria, HWV 143 with La Grande Bande. She joins Marshall Opera in concert as a part of their Oral History Project as well as Columbia College, presenting masterclasses as well as a recital.

Last season, Ms. Tamborini debuted three new roles as Lauretta in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Sofia in Rossini’s Il signor Bruschino with Bronx Opera, and Giulietta in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi with Teatro Nuovo, marking her return to Lincoln Center. She also made a house debut with Bel Cantanti Opera as Adele in Die Fledermaus. The 2022-2023 season included her role debut as Blanche in The Dialogues of the Carmélites with Bronx Opera, singing the soprano solo in Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, competing as a finalist in the Orpheus Vocal Competition, and competing in the Rocky Mountain Regional Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition after winning the Utah District Finals.

In recent seasons, Ms. Tamborini performed as Servilia in Bronx Opera’s La clemenza di Tito and premiered Nirmali Fenn’s When Apathy Becomes Betrayal. In 2021, she brought live opera back to New York City’s stages with Teatro Nuovo, performing as Berta in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. She made her Lincoln Center debut in 2019 as Isoletta in Bellini’s La Straniera with Teatro Nuovo, where she was also an Apprentice Artist for the inaugural season.

Earlier roles include Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen and Mrs. Hayes in Floyd’s Susannah with Opera in the Ozarks, along with performances at the Vancouver International Song Institute. In 2016, she made her international debut in a Bernstein Revue at the Peking National Opera House and the China Conservatory of Music.

Ms. Tamborini’s notable engagements with Michigan State University Opera Theatre include Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Romilda in Handel’s Serse, Miss Lavish in Robert Nelson’s A Room With a View, and Giannetta in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. At Stony Brook Opera, her roles included Aminta in Mozart’s Il re Pastore, Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Céphise in Rameau’s Pigmalion, and Adele in Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus.

Ms. Tamborini has garnered numerous competition accolades throughout her career. She recently won Second Place in The Century Opera’s Lucine Amara Art Song Competition and was a semi-finalist for Opera Index, MIOpera, and the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs’ Emerging Soloist Competitions. She also won the 2020 Riverside Opera Competition and made her Carnegie Hall debut after placing third in the Talents of the World International Voice Competition. Additionally, she has been a semi-finalist for the Orpheus Vocal Competition, Premiere Opera Foundation & NYIOP Competition, Annapolis Opera Competition, 5 Towns Music and Art Foundation Music Competition, Lyra Mozart Competition, and Camille Coloratura Awards. Other honors include First Prize in the Elaine Malbin and Mario Lanza Competition, The North International Music Competition, the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition (Junior Woman’s Division), and finalist in the Harold Haugh Light Opera Vocal Competition. Ms. Tamborini has also performed as a guest artist with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, as the soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah with the Stony Brook Chamber Orchestra, and in numerous recital programs.

A native of Michigan, Ms. Tamborini holds a Master of Music from Stony Brook University, where she studied under Brenda Harris, and a Bachelor of Music from Michigan State University, where she studied with Dr. Anne Nispel.
